We've just launched two new coloured waxes in our Vintage Bird Prep & Finish range, and they make it ridiculously easy to add a gorgeous faux finish to your painted and stained furniture and decor.
Fake It To Make It!
At Bird on the Hill, we have been making furniture waxes for the past 5 years. Our waxes are made with real bees wax, hemp oil, carnuaba wax, and essential oils. Nothing synthetic, nothing harmful, making them a great companion to our non-toxic, low/no VOC paints.
So, we are excited to launch two new colored waxes - sepia (deep brown) and white. These will compliment our existing black coloured wax.
These colored waxes are made of the same premium ingredients as our clear waxes, with addition of artist pigment and binder, and they add a rustic, or aged/vintage touch to painted or stained furniture.
No Fancy Techniques Required!
To use the coloured waxes, simply brush on the wax using a circular motion and leave for 30 minutes before wiping off excess and buffing for a subtle sheen. See the video above for a demonstration, using the Sepia wax to highlight, and add extra dimension to the inlay carved areas on this coffee tray.
If you have a dark coloured surface, then you can deepen it further with the black or sepia wax, or use the white wax for a contrast.
If you have a lighter coloured surface, the white wax will give a more washed look, but will be difficult to notice when used over a very light, or white coloured paint. Using the sepia
or black wax on very light colours may add some extra, darker colour to your flat surfaces, as well as creating contrast in any crevices, carved areas, or distressed scratches, dents, or holes.
Use Alone, Or As Your Final "Faux Finish"
The coloured waxes can be used over clear wax, hemp finishing oil, or our silk clear coats, or even applied directly to the painted finish. The aim is to provide a subtle colour effect without appearing overly noticeable.
The best way to achieve the look you want is to experiment with different coloured surfaces and wax colours on 'practice' pieces of painted wood.
You can remove as much or as little as you like when you're finished applying - just wipe over with a cloth, or use a soft toothbrush to remove any excess wax from deeper areas. You can do this in the first 24 hours after application - before the wax starts to cure and harden.
As our waxes all contain Hemp Oil, you're also hydrating, and conditioning your timber furniture, as well as providing a moisture, and scratch resistant finish over your paint. Win-win!
You can find our coloured wax range online, or ask one of our Australian stockists.
